Respect Those Who Really Deserve It

Many people have this awe and reverence for famous and powerful people. Let us say a person meets Trump. Wowww!! He will take a picture of the meeting and put it on his living room wall, his twitter page and everywhere else where people can see it.

Who is Trump? A man who has bragged about the beautiful married women with whom he has slept. A man whose entire life has revolved around getting more and more money and more and more power. A מושחת by all accounts [even though he has proven himself to be a great friend of the Jewish people and deserves our TREMENDOUS gratitude].

Or a person meets a famous athlete or actor or billionaire etc. He is AWESTRUCK!! Who are  these people generally? How much emotional and spiritual depth do they have? VERY, VERY LITTLE!!!

ONE TALMID CHOCHOM is worth more than all of the greatest quaterbacks in NFL history combined. He has more depth and ruchniyus and talking to him for ten minutes will be more spiritually rewarding than talking to them. One oved Hashem is worth more than all of the Presidents in US history.

We often lack the necessary respect for the people who really deserve it and give excessive respect to people who don't.

I came across a very inspiring and uplifting booklet written by a talmid of Rav Moshe Shapira ztz"l [I can send you a copy if you are interested]. Here are two stories about the respect he accorded to talmidei chochomim - even those who go unappreciated because they don't have a chashuv position.

So next time a talmid chochom knocks on your door asking for a donation for his kollel or to marry off his children - please show him the love and respect he deserves. Just like you would rather that he not ask you for money - he ALSO wishes that he didn't have to ask you for money.
