There is something in the human spirit that COMPELS him to seek out something higher. In the vast majority of cases this spiritual yearning is misplaced [false religions, idolatry, new age etc.] but it exists. Man cannot be satisfied with mere material existence. Even the most militant atheists spend a whole lot of time talking, reading and writing about the G-d that they don't believe in. In every society there exists the phenomena of religious faith - even when it incurs suffering or even death.
Why is that? Why is it so important for people to believe in G-d or some higher power in some form?? Again, the question is not whether they reach the correct conclusions about the nature of G-d because they don't. Only we have a solid tradition based on mass revelation. What interests me is the never ending search for meaning in something greater than oneself.

הננו רואים את הנטיה האלהית, על פי הכרח טבעי פנימי, עצמי, הולכת ומפלסת לה נתיבותיה בלבבו; אף באין אמר ודברים יחשק להתרומם אל על, וחפץ אדיר ימצא בקרבו גם לחוש ולהרגיש בנפשו פנימה מנוחה ומרגוע לב בקרבת אלהים. כמו כן מצד חיי החברה של העמים, אין לנו שום קבוץ חברתי חשוב ומתוקן אפילו במקצת, שלא יפעל בקרבו התכן האמוני והדתי פעולות נכרות ורבות ערך, על ידי זרם השאיפה לקרבת אלקים הזורם בקרבם, אף שהוא בצורה מסותרת ועלומה. ובחיי האנושיות בכללה, הלא ההתגלות וההבעה, הדרך ואופן השאיפה לקרבת אלהים, באיזו צורה שתהיה, הוא החוט הפנימי המאחד וחורז בכללותו את כל האמונות והדתות כולן, שהן הנן המקיפות את כל האנושיות בעלת הערך ההיסטורי. ככה מתברר לנו, מתוך כל מצביו השונים של האדם וחזיונות חייו, המשפט כי הנטיה היותר עזה, תקיפה ועדינה, מכל הנטיות, התשוקות והשאיפות הרוחניות, המתגלות בנפש האדם, היא זו של "קרבת אלהים".
MAN WANTS TO BE CLOSE TO G-D!! The obvious reason for this is because it is part and parcel of his most basic DNA. Not the physical DNA but the spiritual one. We call it .... a soul. Since the soul is a piece of Hashem [כביכול] it makes complete sense that it would want to reconnect to it's source.

It is interesting that in the same parsha that we learn that man is in the image of G-d [and thus wants to reconnect] we also learn about man's existential need to reconnect to his female partner. First they were created as one [as the gemara teaches based on the pasuk], then they were separated and then for the rest of time man cannot be truly happy unless he has a satisfying relationship with his spouse.
