In the tfilla לעולם יהא אדם we talk about how peoples lives are hevel - וימי חייהם הבל לפניך. What does this mean?

One explanation given is that "hevel" is the hot air that rises from a delicious chicken soup. The "real thing" is the actual soup while the smoke that arises from it just dissapates into nothingness. Many people's lives are just hevel - no substance. It is also significant that the Rambam in Hil. Teshuva explains that the shofar is supposed to serve as a wakeup call for those who forget the truth בהבלי הזמן. What is הבלי הזמן?

Time can have substance if you are doing something constructive while if someone does meaningless things it is the הבל of time. Hot air! Havlei hazman [should be] b'gmatria "facebook".

That is also וימי חייהם הבל לפניך - Their whole lives are hevel, hot air, a waste of time. Three hours in front of the TV watching the Bruins-Blackhawks....

Also in a recent post we explained that "hevel" is potential that wasn't realized. Most people go through life with their spiritual capacities never being realized. That is וימי חייהם הבל. Wasted potential. Let's see the Master:
