Are We Better Than Animals?

In davening we say ומותר האדם מן הבהמה אין כי הכל הבל - The preference of man over the animal is nothing because everything is hot air [from Koheles Ch 3/19]. What does this mean? And what is the connection between a man being no better than an animal and the fact that all is הבל - nothingness and hot air?

When Hashem created the world first came the animals and then man. Animals are the preparation for the creation of man. If man does not fulfill his potential then he is no greater than an animal because neither fulfill potential. An animal is a בהמה - which means בה מה [boh mah], what you see is what you get. No potential for growth [ever meet a cat who is self aware?]. A person is called an אדם - from the word אדמה - earth. The earth produces fruits and so should man be productive and fruitful. If he fails to actualize his potential then he is on level of the animal and remains in the realm of unactualized potential. The word for this is הבל. Hot air. Nothing concretized.

Now let us see the words of the Master:-):
